Video: Safety drill held on R Line
Posted on 10.30.16
The Regional Transportation District (RTD) along with emergency responders and other local agencies held an emergency preparedness drill on Saturday, November 5, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Fitzsimons light rail station for the future R Line. The station is located on Fitzsimons Parkway east of Peoria Street in Aurora.
Fitzsimons Parkway was closed from Peoria Street to Victor Street, and traffic was detoured to Colfax Avenue. During the drill, access was not allowed on the portion of the Sand Creek Park trail nearest to Fitzsimons Station.
The drill was a simulated exercise to allow the agencies to coordinate communication and response strategies in the event of an actual emergency along the R Line from Peoria Street to Lincoln Avenue.
The drill scenario: A light rail train collided with a passenger vehicle, resulting in a vehicle being pushed into an overhead electrical wire pole. Under the scenario, this caused multiple injuries and hanging contact wires for this simulation.
