RTD, along with Cognizant Quick Left, hosted the Transportation Data Hackfest on September 13, 2016 at Galvanize Platte as part of Denver Startup Week. About 120 people attended the event, the majority of whom were there to utilize our real-time data to come up with new concepts, plans and code. With just three hours to work, 15 teams of people came up ideas like:
- a map that featured the real-time thoughts of buses, as represented by thought bubbles (like a cartoon character might have)
- concepting better ways to receive real-time mobile notifications on the status of your bus or train
- a service-oriented idea (and the winner) - an app called ‘BusBuddy’ that would match up real-time bus and train information with the locations of various social services, like food banks, free clinics, government offices and more
Three judges chose the finalists and the eventual winner was chosen by the participants themselves through a round of applause.
As part of the contest outcome, RTD has offered continued support to the ‘BusBuddy’ team to help them continue to improve and refine their idea and code into something that could offer real value to our riders who rely on public transportation and social services in combination.
