Taking transit may assist you in achieving your weight loss goals and may even help you reduce high blood pressure and diabetes.

Researchers from the Moriguchi City Health Examination Center in Japan came out with a new study that says taking public transit is better for your health than driving.

Riding the bus or train to work is associated with a lower risk of high blood pressure, diabetes and being overweight, according to the study.

Researchers compared bus and train commuters and walkers and bikers with drivers. After adjusting for other factors such as age, gender, smoking and others they found that, compared to drivers, public transportation users were:

  • 44 percent less likely to be overweight
  • 27 percent less likely to have high blood pressure
  • 34 percent less likely to have diabetes

"People should consider taking public transportation instead of a car, as a part of daily, regular exercise," said lead study author Hisako Tsuji, M.D., director of the Moriguchi City Health Examination Center in Osaka, Japan. "It may be useful for health care providers to ask patients about how they commute."

When I think about my commute via bus or train, there’s definitely a lot more walking involved than if I were to drive. I have to walk several blocks to and from my home to my bus stop and from where the bus drops me off to my office. That means at least 30 minutes a day of walking—a great way to clear my head and burn calories.

Saving money and doing more with your time

Riding RTD buses and trains can help you save money on gas, vehicle maintenance and parking.

According to the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), people in the Denver region can save more than $9,600 per year by using public transportation compared to the cost of owning and driving a vehicle.

And, over the course of a year, those parking costs can add up. It can average $1,995 per year, APTA says.

Besides saving money, you can use the time on your commute to achieve goals. Things like getting your work done, reading that book on how to become the next billionaire, knitting that scarf or sweater you’ve been putting off or deleting emails from your burgeoning inbox.

You can also relax and reduce stress caused from traffic jams.

A survey by HNTB Corp., which plans, designs and manages transportation construction projects, said that people rode mass transit nearly 11 billion times a year because of cost-effectiveness, convenience and because they dislike driving.

According to the HNTB study, the most popular reasons for riding rather than driving were:

  • 38 percent said cost effectiveness
  • 37 percent said to do something else—either working productively or relaxing
  • 30 percent said convenience
  • 23 percent said reducing their carbon footprint
  • 20 percent said they don’t enjoy driving (I personally fall into this category)
  • 16 percent said safety
