Testing of RTD G Line commuter rail trains scheduled to resume Jan. 2

Starting the morning of Tuesday, Jan. 2, testing of commuter rail trains will resume along the forthcoming G Line between Union Station and Wheat Ridge, passing through Northwest Denver, Adams County and Arvada, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) and its contractor, Denver Transit Partners (DTP), confirmed today.

This phase of the testing process will focus on communication and signaling systems, as well as the communication of traffic and rail signals at railroad crossings. Testing of one train is scheduled to take place from about 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday during the first two weeks of January. While more testing is possible after that point, the bulk of the work is to be completed during this time frame.

“This is an exciting step as we move closer toward opening the G Line and providing the public with the service they have been so patient in awaiting,” said RTD CEO and General Manager Dave Genova. “We continue to work closely in this process with all necessary authorities.”

An opening date for the G Line has not yet been announced, as such a determination requires completion of testing and approval of crossing-gate technology by both local and federal agencies. An administrative law judge with the Colorado Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) on Tuesday approved resumption of full testing. Concerning the grade crossings, the Federal Railroad Administration approved their design in September. A three-day hearing on the matter has been scheduled with the CPUC for March 12 and could take place as soon as Feb. 15.

Train horns will be sounding during testing and through the opening of the G Line. Until quiet zones have been established, the use of train horns and other safety measures are important to make drivers and pedestrians aware of train movements. RTD will announce the start of quiet zones for the G Line once such approvals are in place.

Safety is a top priority during G Line testing. During this period, the public must abide by all safety signage at railroad crossings, respect potential closures of railroad or at-grade crossings along the alignment, and not attempt to view testing by accessing construction areas at stations and various locations along the tracks.
