RTD has taken top honor of Grand Champion at the American Public Transportation Association’s annual International Bus Roadeo for 2017.
The Grand Champion award recognizes the system with the highest combined maintenance team and bus operator score. The International Bus Roadeo includes bus operators and mechanics from public transit systems across North America who participate in separate competitions showcasing safe driving skills and vehicle maintenance.
A trio of longstanding mechanics from RTD’s maintenance team – Jon Mitchell, Tim Wallace and Ernesto Perez – worked together to capture three first-place finishes: top maintenance team and two of eight subcategories. Perez has worked with RTD for almost 23 years, Mitchell for more than 18 and Wallace for seven. Thirty-eight teams took part in the maintenance competition, which tests mechanics’ abilities to troubleshoot and quickly fix mechanical problems in engine, transmission, brake and HVAC modules.
RTD bus operator John Deschner – an employee of 35+ years – competed among 60 operators in the 40-foot bus competition, which considered the ultimate safe driving skills test. The event includes challenges related to safety, judgment stops, turning, clearing obstacles and ride smoothness.
This award highlights the talents of our employees, their trade expertise, and dedication to keeping our customers safe.
